I got invited to a cool new event in called the Santa Monica Haunted Foodie Tour! It was created by a dynamic duo Candace and Zach, and we had a great time on Friday afternoon. Which part is better I don’t know: getting to hang with some cool LA foodies, getting a walking tour of Santa Monica, dining at the best restaurants in Santa Monica, or maybe it’s eating the very best and most interesting dishes at those awesome restaurants.
What I know is that over three hours we ate at four great restaurants and at each place we had their best dish. The plates are curated by super foodies Candace and Zach, based on their good taste and long time eating in LA experiences. We started out at Chez Jay, and then went to a some great spots. If you want the lowdown you’ll have to check out the tour!
Below are some great foodpics from the event, including an impromptu photoshoot with Candace and Zach.
Along for the journey with me were these great foodies
Dawn McCoy is totally awesome and a total foodie. Her process seems to go something like this: photograph the food in the best lighting possible, take a bite, and film herself taking a bite. I love it. Great foodie style. I’ll definitely take a page from her foodporn photography methods!
The tour was great, starting at Chez Jay in Santa Monica. We learned about the history of the restaurant, including the fact that one of their peanuts was taken up to the Moon on one of the NASA missions, and was on display at the restaurant for years. One day a drunk Steve McQueen threatened to eat said Astro Nut, though he ultimately let it go. Now the nut is stored safely in a safe. No fun!
The bite at Chez Jay was amazing – squid steak made just right with butter lemon sauce. It was perfect and tender and I totally want more right now!
Candace and Zach are newly married, and this is their business venture, making the city of Los Angeles their office. From all accounts it’s clear they love the work they do, and are madly in love with each other! Very sweet.
Below is a sample of the dishes we got, including prosciutto wrapped dates, robata plates and awesome goat cheese baklava. Seriously. Each plate was super delicious and the best of the best! If you love good food, want great food photography opportunities, or simply a great way to spend an evening this is it!
