I had a great time living in Sherman Oaks. It was at a time when I had just moved back from Manhattan, and part of the reason I moved there was to ensure I have good variety of eats to choose from. This was when gastropubs became a thing, so I saw the revitalization of Ventura Blvd come to life with bars and clubs.
One great meal I loved, a lot, was Smoke City Market. Having been to Austain I have a sense of good BBQ. Sure, it’s subjective. BBQ in other states, and even in other parts of Texas are different. Some are sweet, and some are savory. My BBQ focal points are places like Stubbs and Salt Lick in Austin. With that in mind there’s a special place in my foodie heart for Smoke City BBQ.
The place is styled like a BBQ joint with bench chairs and long, communal tables to share.
The flavor is amazing. They offer standard BBQ fare of brisket, beef ribs, pork sausage and a wide variety of sides. I used to eat there a lot and with little variation my standard continues to be a half rack of ribs and one or two of the following sides: pit beans with bbq meat, black eyed peas in an oil and vinegar dressing, creamy mac n’ cheese, or German potato salad. Below you’ll see a full rack, since I was there with bae.
The details make the meal. While a lot of BBQ places offer a lot of BBQ sauces these guys offer two – sweeter and a heavier consistency, or more of a vinegar sauce. Both are awesome. With the meal they give you 2-3 slices of white bread, and the drinks round out the meal. I always choose the southern sweet iced tea. Great stuff.
To add to the taste they offer saeurkraut and pickled jalapenos.
The meat is thick, it falls off the bone and you’ll be tasting the BBQ for hours. It’s a hearty meal!
So, if you’re in the valley get to this place and enjoy awesome BBQ that has few competitors in LA.
